Maximizing yield in land-constrained European markets 

Energy developers face tighter constraints regarding land availability, environmental regulations, and grid capacity limitations. To counter these challenges, modern project layouts feature a higher Ground Coverage Ratio (GCR) to maximize installed capacity per hectare. However, tightly packed rows naturally amplify the risks of inter-row shading, uneven irradiation, and subsequent performance drop-offs. The Hi-MO9 Prime is engineered to address these spatial dilemmas, enabling a substantially higher installed capacity per unit area compared with mainstream non-BC modules. 

In high-GCR project modelling, the module can increase total installed capacity by 4.62% under identical land area and layout conditions. A 10-hectare project scenario in the UK designed with a 50% GCR showed: mainstream non-BC modules achieve 12.00MW installed capacity, whereas Hi-MO9 Prime achieves 12.56MW on the same plot. This results in an annual energy yield gain of approximately 648.4MWh, translating to more than €67,430 additional annual revenue for asset owners. 

Technological advances increase efficiency, structural reliability, and long-term performance 

Built on LONGi’s advanced HPBC2.0 (Hybrid Passivated Back Contact) cell architecture, the Hi-MO9 Prime marks a technological leap forward. By placing all electrical contacts on the rear of the cell, the front surface remains entirely unobstructed, maximizing light absorption and elevating long-term value for global large-scale deployments. It also delivers superior partial shading tolerance to protect asset owners’ revenue streams. Its highly parallel BC cell structure reduces electrical losses caused by localized shading from row-to-row obstructions, dust, fallen leaves, or other temporary objects. When a single cell is shaded, the Hi-MO9 Prime can reduce power loss by more than 70% compared with conventional non-BC modules.

La giunta regionale della Toscana ha varato una nuova proposta di legge per semplificare le procedure di installazione degli impianti a energia rinnovabile. Il provvedimento, illustrato dal presidente Eugenio Giani, rappresenta il terzo e ultimo tassello di un pacchetto strategico che fa seguito all’individuazione delle aree idonee e al Piano regionale delle zone di accelerazione (Prizat). L’obiettivo principale è snellire gli iter burocratici anche in quei territori che non rientrano nelle zone già destinate a uno sviluppo rapido, creando un quadro normativo più chiaro.

Il testo, che passa ora all’esame del Consiglio regionale, fissa degli obiettivi di produzione specifici per ogni singolo Comune. Per raggiungere questi traguardi verrà introdotto un meccanismo di copianificazione: nel caso in cui un’amministrazione locale debba fare i conti con vincoli paesaggistici o aree protette, la Regione interverrà direttamente con provvedimenti dedicati per superare gli ostacoli, consentendo in via speciale la realizzazione degli impianti e il raggiungimento della quota prefissata.

Attualmente la Toscana soddisfa il 51% del proprio fabbisogno energetico attraverso fonti pulite come geotermia, fotovoltaico, eolico e idroelettrico. Questo dato la posiziona al quarto posto in Italia per volume di produzione, dietro a Lombardia, Lazio e Veneto. Sfruttando le direttive della legge nazionale 4 del 2026, l’amministrazione punta a innalzare questa quota fino a due terzi della produzione totale entro il 2030, con il traguardo fissato a quota 6.150 GW complessivi per consolidare il proprio ruolo nel panorama energetico nazionale.

L’assessore all’ambiente David Barontini ha precisato che le nuove regole si concentrano in modo particolare sugli impianti di minori dimensioni, considerati più compatibili con le esigenze del territorio. Verranno favorite tecnologie come il mini-eolico, l’eolico offshore, l’agrivoltaico nelle aree idonee e le sonde geotermiche a circuito chiuso. La stesura del provvedimento ha visto la collaborazione dei consiglieri del Movimento 5 Stelle Luca Rossi Romanelli e Irene Galletti, con l’intento condiviso di accelerare la transizione ecologica tutelando al contempo il paesaggio e le eccellenze agricole.

Per garantire uniformità nelle autorizzazioni, la norma introduce criteri minimi di sostenibilità e regole severe per impedire il frazionamento artificioso dei progetti. Lo sviluppo delle nuove fonti sarà indirizzato in via prioritaria verso spazi già urbanizzati, come aree produttive, zone commerciali e grandi parcheggi, per arginare il consumo di suolo. L’orizzonte finale prevede l’aggiunta di almeno 4,25 gigawatt di energia rinnovabile entro il 2030, seguendo le direttive europee sulla decarbonizzazione.

The solution has reached full commercial maturity across technology, production capacity, and supply chain readiness. Cumulative shipments are expected to reach 1 GWh by the end of 2026, with global deliveries to begin in June 2027.

TENER Sodium: Certainty for an Uncertain Future 

As the share of renewable energy continues to rise and AI-driven power demand surges, energy storage is moving from a supporting role to critical infrastructure for the global energy system. However, conventional energy storage has relied heavily on lithium-based systems, whose concentrated supply and volatile prices pose growing supply chain risks. Sodium—over 1,000 times more abundant than lithium and widely distributed—offers better extreme-temperature performance, safety, and cost potential, making a technology transition in energy storage inevitable.

Powered by CATL’s latest sodium-ion technology, TENER Sodium delivers more than 30 MWh of rated capacity on a fully modular architecture. This architecture delivers three direct benefits for customers: 

Simpler project deployment, with each single module weighing about 42 tonnes and only 34 units required for a 1 GWh site. 

Greater configuration flexibility, with energy and power blocks decoupled to support flexible storage durations of 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 hours, tailored to specific project requirements. 

Lower maintenance cost, as faulty modules can be quickly isolated and replaced independently, simultaneously improving station-level system availability while reducing customer OPEX and maximizing asset utilization. 

Beyond modular convenience, CATL has purpose-built a station-level platform specifically for sodium-ion systems. 

1.Voltage regulation: To address the wide voltage range of sodium-ion batteries, CATL has developed a dedicated bidirectional (Bi-DC) voltage regulation system for its sodium solution. The system enables automatic voltage boosting in the low-voltage range, allowing the PCS to consistently deliver optimal output across the full range. This improves overall system round trip efficiency (RTE) by nearly 2%. For a 1 GWh energy storage station, this means millions of additional kilowatt-hours of power generation each year. The system is compatible with all major PCS products worldwide and provides stronger grid support capability. 

2. BMS system: CATL has designed a BMS system for sodium-ion energy storage systems to leverage sodium chemistry’s continuously sloping voltage curve, enabling more accurate SOC estimation. Furthermore, the overcharge SOC tolerance of sodium-ion batteries has been increased by 20% compared with lithium-ion batteries. This gives the BMS an additional 20% safety margin for operation, allowing greater flexibility. 

3. Ultra-low auxiliary energy consumption: The unique top-discharge airflow design eliminates thermal-island effects at the source, reducing system heat generation by nearly 30% compared to conventional solutions. Combined with a highly efficient liquid-cooling system, auxiliary power consumption has been reduced from the industry average of 2% to 1%. For large-scale, long-duration energy storage projects, this improvement can save millions of euros in operating costs. 

4. Low-noise design: TENER Sodium operates at only 65 decibels — 10 decibels lower than conventional systems. This helps address local community concerns commonly encountered across the industry, allowing for energy storage stations to be built closer to load centers, saving substantial transmission and distribution costs. 

In addition, the TENER Sodium system is compatible with LFP systems and shares the same physical footprint. The same platform can accommodate either sodium-ion or lithium-ion batteries without changing enclosures, redesigning projects, or repeating certification processes. This flexibility to switch seamlessly between sodium-ion and lithium-ion technologies provides customers with a practical solution for managing lithium price volatility. Looking ahead, the TENER Sodium system also reserves an upgrade path to 2000V high-voltage architectures, enabling it to adapt to evolving technology routes. 

A Decade in the Making: Supply Chain and Manufacturing Now Fully Commercial-Grade 

TENER Sodium’s comprehensive advantages in safety, returns, and reliability did not emerge overnight. CATL has been engaged in sodium-ion battery R&D since 2016, investing nearly €1.2 billion over the past decade. With more than 300 R&D professionals involved, it has accumulated more than 1,600 patent families and over 200 globally granted patents, overcome more than 100 technical challenges, and fully established the end-to-end manufacturing process from materials to cells. 

Sodium-ion technology has evolved from a laboratory project to an energy storage material system with scalable capability. At present, CATL has built up manufacturing capability to deliver tens of thousands of tonnes of anode and cathode materials. Production costs for the NFPP are expected to decline further as the technology matures. 

CATL is working with system integrators to build a complete closed loop ecosystem for sodium-ion energy storage, covering cell R&D, system delivery, product testing, and commercial deployment. 22 June 2026 – THEON International Plc is pleased to announce total new order intake of approximately €70 million. A significant part of this new order intake comes from Rheinmetall for the Bundeswehr’s Future Soldier program (Infanterist der Zukunft – IdZ), with a mix of a new firm order and exercised option for various products of it’s A.R.M.E.D ecosystem portfolio. Additional orders for the IdZ program may be received later in the year through additional exercised options. This new order further expands THEON’s key role in the soldier digital vision system in the IdZ program and underlines THEON’s overall ambition to take a leading position in Augmented Reality (AR) applications for the soldier. 

Order intake accelerated in the second quarter as expected, reaching c.€153 million in Q2, with an additional €27 million in options. This brings total year to date order intake to around €223 million, along with a further €68 million in options. Notably, these figures reflect the full consolidation of Kappa and Harder Digital order intake. THEON expects further acceleration in the second half of the year, mainly towards end of Q4, as per typical business seasonality, and reiterates its guidance of maintaining an organic book-to-bill ratio above 1.0x for FY 2026.

Strategic Acceleration

Dal primo agosto viaggiare sui mezzi pubblici in Toscana costerà di più, ma le istituzioni stanno mettendo a punto un sistema di rimborsi destinato ai pendolari abituali. La Regione, in accordo con le amministrazioni comunali e provinciali, sta studiando l’introduzione di un bonus per calmierare i rincari previsti per gli abbonamenti di autobus e tramvia, con validità pari o superiore al trimestre.

L’investimento stimato per questa misura oscilla tra i cinque e gli otto milioni di euro, con un contributo regionale garantito di base di cinque milioni. Le modalità operative e le quote di partecipazione economica degli enti locali saranno definite nel giro di una decina di giorni, al termine dei necessari approfondimenti di natura tecnico-legale. Il presidente Eugenio Giani ha spiegato la logica dell’iniziativa: “Intendiamo premiare gli utenti più fidelizzati”. Il rimborso non annullerà per intero i rincari, ma servirà a ridurne l’impatto economico. I criteri di accesso dipenderanno dalla natura dei fondi impiegati: se verranno utilizzate le risorse del Fondo sociale europeo, lo sconto sarà calcolato in base all’Isee, mentre con altri canali di finanziamento la platea potrebbe allargarsi a tutti i pendolari senza alcun vincolo di reddito.

La manovra si rende necessaria per attutire gli aumenti tariffari in vigore dal prossimo mese. Il biglietto urbano singolo passerà da 1,7 a 2 euro, registrando un incremento del 17 per cento. Per gli abbonamenti, invece, la crescita si attesterà intorno all’8 per cento: una variazione che comporterà una spesa aggiuntiva annuale di circa trenta euro per le tratte urbane e di quaranta euro per i percorsi extraurbani compresi tra i venti e i trenta chilometri. Giani ha tenuto a precisare che la revisione dei prezzi non è il frutto di una scelta politica della giunta, bensì un adeguamento all’inflazione stabilito dal contratto dodicennale con il gestore Autolinee Toscane, redatto originariamente nel 2013 e divenuto operativo solo nel 2021 a causa di una lunga serie di ricorsi.

Oltre al piano economico per gli abbonati, dal vertice tra gli enti territoriali è emersa la decisione di costituire un osservatorio regionale sul trasporto pubblico locale, al quale prenderanno parte i rappresentanti di Anci e Upi. La nuova struttura avrà il compito di vigilare sulla regolarità del servizio e sulle specifiche esigenze di ogni territorio. L’obiettivo è quello di monitorare le frequenze dei mezzi e le corse saltate, con la prontezza di applicare sanzioni dirette al concessionario in caso di disservizi.
