(NASDAQ:QNT), Rolls-Royce, Riverlane and EPCC, the UK National Supercomputing Centre based at the University of Edinburgh, today announced an agreement to explore the quantum computing capabilities needed in future industrial workflows, such as gas turbine design. 

Under the agreement, Quantinuum will provide access to its quantum systems and software environment; Rolls-Royce will contribute industrial design use cases and domain expertise; Riverlane will contribute quantum error correction and algorithmic expertise; and EPCC will contribute supercomputing expertise and hybrid workflow integration. 

Complex fluid dynamics simulations are central to gas turbine design, but they can require substantial computing resources as models become more detailed. In what is expected to be a multi-year collaboration, the partners will explore how fault-tolerant quantum computers could work alongside supercomputers to address this bottleneck, and accurately model fluid dynamics inside gas turbines.

This project builds on prior collaborations between Rolls-Royce, Riverlane and EPCC that laid the foundations for understanding key algorithmic, error correction and data requirements for tackling fluid dynamic simulations with commercial quantum computers.

Launching on World Chimpanzee Day, which marks the 66th anniversary of Dr. Jane Goodall’s arrival at Gombe, Tanzania to begin her wild chimpanzee study, the two-year programme builds on more than six decades of pioneering field research, bringing together advanced computational modelling, hybrid quantum-classical computing and behavioural ecology into a new state-of-the-art collaborative research framework. 

The programme, Ecology of War and Peace: Using Quantum-Enhanced Agent-Based Modelling to Explain Contrasting Intergroup Behaviour in Chimpanzees and Bonobos, will mark a first-of-its-kind application of quantum-enhanced computation to the study of ecology, evolution and behaviour, representing a bold new chapter in the Jane Goodall Institute USA’s decades-long legacy of using innovative technologies to support long-term research, conservation and education. 

The programme will bring together JGI’s unparalleled scientific legacy, behavioural modelling developed by researchers at the University of Minnesota, FormationQ’s expertise in designing and operating applied programmes and IonQ’s quantum computing platform. 

At the centre of the programme is B3GET (Behaviour, Ecology, Genetics, Evolution and Tradeoffs), a sophisticated agent-based model in which virtual primates live, move, forage, reproduce and interact across artificial landscapes. Researchers can systematically vary ecological conditions including food distribution, home range size and group cohesion rules, to investigate how environmental factors influence patterns of cooperation and conflict over time. 

Chimpanzees and bonobos are humanity’s two closest living relatives, yet they display strikingly different patterns of intergroup behaviour. Jane Goodall famously observed chimpanzee warfare in the 1970s, in which chimpanzees engaged in organised, lethal inter-group conflict. Bonobos, however, are known to peacefully socialize between communities. 

The answer in explaining this difference, researchers believe, lies in ecology: in the way food is distributed across the landscape, the size of the ranges each species must cover, and the moment-to-moment decisions individuals make about whether to travel alone or in groups. Decades of field research have provided extraordinary insights into these behaviours. However, understanding how numerous ecological variables interact across complex systems remains a significant challenge. 

By combining advanced agent-based modelling with hybrid quantum-classical computational approaches, the programme will investigate how quantum computing can help researchers explore this complex space in new ways and improve the calibration of large-scale behavioural models, thereby helping identify the ecological conditions that distinguish the lethal intergroup aggression of chimpanzees from the more peaceful coexistence of bonobos. 

The project will also provide insights into how chimpanzees’ natural behaviour connects to habitat and increased mortality. Both factors are essential to not only understand chimpanzees, but also better identify and protect habitats and model chimpanzee populations to develop more effective conservation strategies.

La piattaforma consentirà di supportare l’analisi statistica della prevalenza dei patogeni e dei trend epidemiologici associati alle diverse patologie e aree geografiche, contribuendo alla generazione di evidenze cliniche su scala globale. 

Il Global Million Clinical Study (GMCS) si propone di superare i limiti dell’approccio diagnostico tradizionale basato sulla ricerca mirata di specifici patogeni, valutando il valore clinico di una strategia completa di PCR sindromica, in grado di rilevare simultaneamente, attraverso un unico test, i principali agenti eziologici associati a una determinata condizione clinica. Lo studio analizzerà dati generati nella pratica clinica reale, consentendo di acquisire informazioni difficilmente ottenibili mediante i percorsi diagnostici tradizionali, tra cui l’identificazione di patogeni non rilevati precedentemente, la caratterizzazione delle coinfezioni, l’analisi dei genotipi e la valutazione delle dinamiche epidemiologiche regionali e stagionali. 

Nella fase iniziale, lo studio si concentrerà su alcune delle principali aree delle malattie infettive, tra cui le infezioni del tratto respiratorio, le infezioni gastrointestinali e le infezioni dell’apparato genitale. L’obiettivo è generare informazioni aggiuntive rispetto a quelle ottenibili con gli attuali approcci diagnostici e valutare in che misura tali evidenze possano contribuire a supportare e migliorare il processo decisionale clinico. 

Le più avanzate tecnologie diagnostiche basate sulla PCR sono oggi in grado di garantire prestazioni elevate e standardizzate. Tuttavia, le pratiche diagnostiche adottate nella routine clinica possono variare significativamente da un paese all’altro in funzione delle caratteristiche dei rispettivi sistemi sanitari. Anche a fronte della stessa patologia, infatti, i patogeni ricercati, i protocolli diagnostici raccomandati e le modalità di rimborso possono differire in base alle linee guida nazionali e all’organizzazione dell’assistenza sanitaria.

FIRENZE – Il governatore Eugenio Giani ha scelto il nuovo direttore generale della direzione sanità welfare e coesione sociale della Regione: sarà Marco Torre, attuale direttore generale dell’Asl Toscana Sud-Est. Sostituirà Federico Gelli.

“Ritengo – commenta Giani – che Torre possa essere la persona giusta per questo incarico, visti i proficui risultati e la collaborazione che c’è stata negli anni recenti con il sottoscritto, con l’assessore al diritto alla salute e alle politiche sociali Monia Monni e con tutta la giunta”. “Saranno ora espletati – aggiunge – gli ulteriori passaggi di legge”. La decisione in ogni caso è stata presa.

Alle 12 di oggi (13 luglio)  era scaduto il termine per presentare le domande al ruolo di direttore generale. La legge attribuisce al presidente della Regione la scelta.

LUCCA – Una complessa indagine contro il traffico illecito di farmaci oppioidi e stupefacenti, nata nell’ambito dei controlli mirati sul fentanyl, ha portato alla luce un collaudato sistema di falsificazione e spaccio tra le province di Lucca, Pistoia e Firenze. L’operazione, condotta dai carabinieri del Nas di Firenze sotto il coordinamento della Procura della Repubblica di Pistoia, ha condotto all’esecuzione di quattro misure cautelari emesse dal Gip nei confronti dei presunti responsabili.

Al centro dell’inchiesta si trova una coppia di fidanzati, un uomo di 34 anni e una donna di 32 anni, originari di Pescia ma residenti ad Altopascio. Per i due giovani è scattata la misura dell’obbligo di dimora nel comune di residenza, lo stesso provvedimento notificato a un terzo indagato cinquantenne. La misura più restrittiva, ovvero la custodia cautelare agli arresti domiciliari, è stata invece disposta per il quarto indagato, un trentasettenne dipendente di Estar, l’ente della Regione Toscana che gestisce gli acquisti sanitari.

Le indagini hanno preso le mosse nel 2025 proprio partendo da alcune verifiche di routine effettuate dai militari in diverse farmacie del territorio pistoiese. Qui l’attenzione degli investigatori del Nucleo Antisofisticazione e Sanità si era concentrata su numerose ricette mediche che presentavano palesi anomalie nella compilazione. Grazie alla successiva e fondamentale collaborazione avviata con l’Ausl Toscana Centro, gli inquirenti sono riusciti a ricostruire nel dettaglio l’ingegnoso meccanismo fraudolento messo in atto dagli indagati.

Il sistema si basava sull’utilizzo di ricettari cartacei e timbri medici che venivano precedentemente rubati direttamente all’interno delle strutture dell’ospedale di Pescia. Una volta ottenuti i blocchetti, i falsificatori provvedevano a riempire le prescrizioni mediche inserendo nominativi di fantasia dei beneficiari; per evitare che i controlli sommari facessero saltare il banco, i nomi inesistenti venivano astutamente associati a codici fiscali reali e attivi. Secondo quanto accertato dagli uomini del Nas, il sodalizio è riuscito a piazzare in questo modo oltre 500 ricette provento di furto, ottenendo la dispensazione di svariate tipologie di medicinali, con assoluta prevalenza di quelli ad azione stupefacente. Il danno economico complessivo è stato quantificato in oltre 44mila euro, una somma che è rimasta quasi interamente a carico delle casse del Servizio Sanitario Nazionale

Arc XP launches Ask The News, giving news publishers a way to answer reader questions with their own journalism — and keep the audience data, conversions, and revenue that AI platforms are quietly capturing. 

WASHINGTON, July 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Every day, millions of readers who once visited a news site now get their answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overviews — without the publisher seeing a single pageview, collecting a data point, or earning a cent. Arc XP, the media operating system built by The Washington Post, is launching a product designed to stop that. 

New data underscore the urgency. According to the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026 (published June 2026), only 4% of AI chatbot users say they always or often click through to original news sources — compared to 19% from search. As readers migrate their questions to AI, publishers are watching referral traffic go with them. 

Ask The News is an AI-powered answer layer that publishers embed directly on their own digital properties. When a reader has a question, Ask The News answers it using the publisher’s own reporting — with attribution, editorial guardrails, and guards against the open-web hallucination risk that defines generic AI tools. The publisher owns the interaction, the intent data it generates, and every business opportunity that flows from it.

The product automatically declines to answer when there is insufficient source reporting to do so confidently — a guardrail that sharply distinguishes it from general-purpose AI tools.

A Subscription Gateway meters answers rather than articles, presenting a conversion prompt after a reader has already received value — a higher-intent moment than a traditional paywall. And Contextual Advertising with IAB Topic Intelligence classifies reader questions and answers in real time, generating intent-level signals that route through a publisher’s existing ad stack without surrendering audience data to a third party.
